Washington Heights Church, similarly to the population boom of the Wasatch Front, has seen an exponential growth in membership and community engagement within the last several years. So much so, that the additions and renovations they have made as of 2016 have capped the congregation’s capacity to attend their services. As both a current and forward-thinking solution, MWA developed a 32,000 SF addition that will allow WHC’s message of faith and hope to reach a larger audience. The new portion of the building will include a nearly 5,500 SF sanctuary auditorium with 2,ooo seats, a new 38’x20′ LED screen with auxiliary projection screens, and a backstage area equipped with a baptistry, green room, changing areas, and kitchenette. The building envelope uses a variety of passive strategies such as thought-out building orientation, adequate canopy overhangs for summer coverage, and ideal storefront heights to maximize daylighting in specific spaces. The exterior utilizes minimal and simplistic finishes that allow the tectonics of the building to be the, mainstay of the project.
